An Electrical Installation Condidtion Report (EICR) is like an MOT for your car. It will check the overall condition of your wiring. It covers:
- Disconnection times for your circuit breakers (fuses)
- The continuity of earthing within your house
- Earthing arrangements between your house and the substation
- The condition of all cable insulation
- Potential fault currents
- Polarity
- RCD disconnection times
Landlords are required to have an EICR carried out every five years (more frequently for older wiring) or before a new tenant moves in.
The maximum recommended duration for a homeowner to have an EICR done is every ten years, although older wiring systems should be done more regularly.
EICR are also a good way to put your mind at ease, or if you think there could be something wrong with your electrics
